You own your own business… you know you need social media… but there are so many different marketing platforms out there even thinking about it makes your eyes start to glaze over … you’re not the only one!

I grew up in an era when a mobile phone would refer to the home phone being unplugged and hurled across the room, after your dad had spent hours trying to fix it, only to ascertain he wasn’t a phone technician in a previous life!

Then, in my late teens, when mobile phones were finally introduced, this revolutionary innovation was so bulky it could have been used to prop up a house foundation!

Fast forward to present day, hard cover phone books are nearly  obsolete, (replacing Nokia phones as doorstops), and marketing’s all moved online.

So you’ve got 3 options, bury your head in the sand and hope online marketing fades from existence, (like Paris Hilton’s pop career), learn the basics of social media marketing, or pay experts to run your marketing.

#1 DEVELOP A SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN STRATEGY TARGETED TO REACH YOUR MARKETING GOALS

Many people make the mistake of joining social media platforms to market their business, without clear direction on how they are going to do this. It’s like going hunting for bears without a gun, probably a little silly… and generally achieving tragic results!

Before you start promoting your business on social media, you need to determine what your goals are, or your campaign aim. Whether this is boosting sales, achieving broader market reach for your brand or promoting a new product or service, you can have more than one goal. Once you’ve decided on your campaign aim, then you can more efficiently determine what type of social media posts are going to help you achieve this, which simplified is your social media campaign strategy.

#2 CROSS PROMOTE ON DIFFERENT SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS

When you start marketing through social media, it’s important to cross promote. Make sure you join a couple of social media platforms, so you can determine which of these is more effective in helping you achieve your campaign aim. But don’t be like Lindsey Lohan in a bar, you don’t need to be on everything!

#3 REGULARLY CHECK YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ANALYTICS

While your social media campaign aim will not change, you need to be flexible as to how you achieve this, or your campaign strategy. To see which social media posts and platforms are working more effectively, assess the analytics provided in the settings of each platform. See what posts your audience likes, shares, or makes comments on, you’ll soon determine which posts are a hit or a miss. Most of all don’t be scared of change, unless it’s a bad facelift or nose job… then you should be very afraid!

#4 TRY, TRY AND TRY AGAIN!

Building a social media audience is not something that happens overnight. That is, unless you pay for several thousand subscribers from a dodgy overseas source… which could end up in you becoming banned from social media quicker than Justin Bieber getting another traffic violation! Make sure to mix things up with your social media campaign, and once you see what posts are working with your target market or audience, tailor your strategy to suit.
